2020 Scouts’ Report

This year, as always, has been a busy one in Scouts. We have had an average of 24 Scouts throughout the year, and a few Gold Awards earned. Our leadership team is healthy, with Whistler and Spanner taking joint responsibility for the section, ably assisted by Crispy, Noodle, Woody and Boots.

Last summer we did lots of activities outside, making the most of our beautiful local environment, including the First Broughton Gifford Monopoly Run.

We did athletics outside, made some camp gadgets and did a spot of cooking in preparation for our Summer Camp.

Camp last year was in St Brides, Pembrokeshire; a joint adventure with Explorers. The scenic campsite was very close to the beach, allowing us to do sea kayaking, cliff climbing, surfing and beach-based games amongst other things. A day out in Tenby with a delicious fish and chip takeaway on the beach was a fabulous ending to a week in the Welsh sunshine.

Autumn term is always a bit dark and gloomy weather-wise, but we managed to fill the evenings with a variety of different sessions at the Hut. Our oldest Scouts took charge for some environmental themed evenings, we did a ready, steady cook competition with some interesting results, the Explorers came along and did meditation and we heard some great American tales from the 2 Jamboreeists. Shooting/knifework and fire building also featured heavily in the programme.

There were some days out, including a Mechanics badge at Tidworth Army Camp, the Joti at Potterne, Remembrance Parade, and Bag Packing at Melksham Sainsburys to raise valuable funds.

We finished the year with a fabulous skating session at Whitehall Ice Skating Rink with hot chocolate and donuts.

Springtime allowed us to enter the Cooking Competition, coming a respective 3rd and 5th. We also did Glowstick Bowling, Messy Challenges, a Badge Quiz, learned how to make butter and cheese and took part in Woody’s Fabulous PT session.

And then the world shut down.

We look forward to resuming normality soon.
